An AI audit trail is a time-stamped record of an AI system's activity: the inputs it received, the outputs or actions it produced, which version of the tool was used, and any human approvals or overrides.
Logs are generated automatically by many business-grade AI tools, and can be exported or searched. For AI agents that take actions, such as updating stock, issuing refunds or sending emails, the trail should show what changed, when, and on whose authority.
Retailers and venues use audit trails to investigate complaints, correct errors, show regulators or insurers how a decision was made, spot misuse by staff and measure how well a tool performs. When choosing a vendor, ask what is logged, how long it is retained, who can see it and whether it is exportable.
Pitfalls include logs that capture personal information without a retention limit, tools that keep no records at all, and logs nobody reviews. Balance accountability with privacy by logging what is needed and securing it. Decide in advance who may read the logs and when they are deleted, and include that in your privacy policy.
It matters because you cannot defend or learn from what you cannot trace. When an AI assistant tells a customer something wrong, a trail lets you find out why and prevent a repeat.
