What is Cyber Security?

Also known as: cybersecurity, information security, IT security

Cyber security is the practice of protecting an organisation's computers, networks, software and data from attack, theft, damage and disruption. It combines technology, processes and staff behaviour, because most breaches involve a mix of technical weakness and human error rather than a single failure.

Effective protection is layered. Firewalls and secure Wi-Fi guard the network, endpoint protection defends devices, multi-factor authentication secures accounts, patching closes known vulnerabilities, and backups allow recovery. Monitoring and logging help detect problems early, while staff training reduces the chance of phishing emails succeeding. The Australian Signals Directorate publishes the Essential Eight, a set of mitigation strategies widely used as a practical baseline.

Retailers and hospitality venues hold customer details, loyalty data and payment systems, and they run on tight margins with casual staff and shared devices, which makes them attractive targets. An attack on a POS or payments environment can stop trading entirely. Under the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme, many organisations must notify affected individuals and the regulator when an eligible breach is likely to cause serious harm.

Pitfalls include treating security as a one-off purchase, reusing passwords, ignoring updates, giving staff more access than they need and having no plan for responding to an incident. Start by knowing what systems and data you hold, then address the most likely risks first. A tested incident response plan matters as much as preventive tools.

Good security protects revenue, reputation and customer trust. RetailCare provides cyber security services for retail and hospitality alongside its managed IT support.
