AI for Retail & Hospitality

What is Data Quality?

Also known as: clean data, data accuracy, garbage in garbage out

Data quality describes how accurate, complete, consistent, timely and unique your data is. Good data reflects reality; poor data has duplicates, gaps, typos, outdated entries or conflicting records.

AI tools learn from and act on the data they are given, so errors flow through. This is the old principle of garbage in, garbage out. A forecasting model trained on stock counts that were never corrected will produce confident but wrong orders.

Retailers and hospitality businesses can improve quality with simple habits: consistent product names and SKUs, regular stocktakes, mandatory fields at the till, merging duplicate customers, removing old items and fixing supplier data. Quality checks before connecting an AI tool are well worth the effort, and a short fortnightly clean-up routine keeps problems from building up.

Pitfalls include assuming the vendor will clean up data automatically, ignoring ownership of fixes, and measuring quality once rather than continuously. Negative stock, missing barcodes and unrecorded wastage are common culprits.

It matters because many failed AI projects trace back to poor data rather than poor technology. Clean data also improves day-to-day reporting, ordering and customer communication, whether or not AI is involved. Even a basic monthly review of your top products and customer lists can lift results noticeably.
