What is Demand Sensing?

Also known as: short-term demand sensing, real-time demand signals, nowcasting

Demand sensing is a short-term forecasting approach that updates predictions from the latest data, typically over days or weeks. It reacts to what is happening now instead of assuming next week will look like last year.

AI models take in recent point-of-sale data, online traffic, weather forecasts, local events, promotions, supplier delays and sometimes social trends. They compare these with past patterns and adjust the forecast, so a heatwave lifts cold drinks and a rainy weekend reduces outdoor furniture.

Grocers, convenience stores and cafes use it to adjust orders and prep quantities. Retailers use it to rebalance stock between stores and to trigger replenishment before a stock-out. It sits alongside longer-range demand forecasting, which handles seasonality and planning.

It needs reliable, timely data: if sales or stock records are patchy, the signals mislead. Be wary of tools that promise large accuracy gains without showing results on your own data. Keep a manual override for unusual events and review forecast errors regularly to learn where the model is weak.

For perishable and weather-sensitive lines, sharper short-term forecasts directly reduce waste and lost sales. Compare each forecast against actual sales for a few weeks before trusting it with large orders, and record the reasons for big misses.
