Internet failover is a setup where a site has a second connection, often a 4G or 5G mobile service, that takes over automatically when the primary internet goes down. Staff and systems keep working without anyone needing to intervene.
A router or SD-WAN device monitors the main connection. If it detects a fault, it redirects traffic to the backup link, and switches back when the main service recovers.
Cloud POS, card payments and online ordering all depend on the internet, so an outage can stop trading. A failover link protects sales during NBN faults, cable cuts and provider outages.
Check the backup has enough speed and data allowance, that the signal is good where the device is placed, and that failover is tested regularly. Prioritise critical traffic such as payments over general browsing.
