AI for Retail & Hospitality

What is Multimodal AI?

Also known as: multimodal model, vision language model, image and text AI

Multimodal AI refers to models that work across several kinds of input and output, not only text. A single model might read a photo, listen to a voice message, understand a document with tables and respond in text or speech.

These models convert different content types into a shared internal representation, so they can reason across them. You can show one a photo of a shelf and ask what is out of stock, or upload a handwritten invoice and ask for the totals.

Practical uses include reading supplier invoices and delivery dockets, checking a planogram photo against the intended layout, generating product images and descriptions together, voice ordering at a drive-through, and helping staff identify a product from a picture. Customers can also send a photo of an item they want and ask for something similar.

Accuracy varies: models can misread small print, blurry photos or unusual layouts, and counting items in an image remains error-prone. Check privacy before sending images that include customers or staff faces. Costs are usually higher than text alone, and processing images takes longer.

Multimodal capability widens what AI can do around a store or kitchen, because so much retail information lives in photos, paperwork and spoken requests rather than neat text.
