What is No-Code Automation?

Also known as: no-code tools, low-code automation, drag-and-drop automation

No-code automation is the use of visual tools that let people build automated workflows without writing software. Users connect apps and set rules by dragging blocks, choosing options or describing what they want in plain language.

These platforms provide ready-made connectors to popular software such as email, spreadsheets, accounting, CRM and booking tools. A workflow is set by choosing a trigger, such as a new form submission, and one or more actions. Many now include AI steps for summarising, classifying or drafting. Low-code tools are similar but allow some custom code.

Small retailers and venues use no-code tools to move online orders into spreadsheets, send review requests after a visit, alert managers to low stock or log enquiries from social media. They suit one-off needs where hiring a developer is not worthwhile.

The downsides are limits on complex logic, per-task fees that add up, and automations that nobody documents. Whoever builds it often leaves, so record what each workflow does and who owns it. Be careful with customer data passing through third-party services, and prefer a proper integration for core systems like POS. Check pricing too, since many platforms charge per task and busy workflows can become costly.

It matters because it puts automation within reach of businesses that have no IT team.
