What is Omnichannel Retail?

Also known as: unified commerce, omni-channel retailing

Omnichannel retail is an approach where a retailer connects its physical stores, website, mobile app and other sales channels so customers experience one consistent business. Stock, pricing, orders and customer information are shared rather than managed separately in each channel.

Technically, it relies on integration between the POS, ecommerce platform, inventory system and customer database. When a sale occurs in any channel, stock updates everywhere, and customers can be recognised whether they shop in store or online. Features like click and collect, ship from store, endless aisle and cross-channel returns all depend on this shared foundation.

Retailers adopt omnichannel to meet shoppers who research online, visit a store and then buy through whichever channel is most convenient. Stores can act as pickup points and mini fulfilment centres, while online data helps staff serve customers better in person.

The main challenge is data accuracy. If stock counts are wrong, a customer can buy something online that is not on the shelf. Other pitfalls include disconnected systems, inconsistent pricing between channels and staff who are not trained on online orders. Start with clean product data and a clear picture of which processes need to connect.

Omnichannel matters because customer expectations are set by the best online experiences, and a fragmented business is harder to run. RetailCare supports platforms such as ERPLY and Nomni and builds ecommerce and integration work that links stores with online channels.
