What is Prompt?

Also known as: AI prompt, user prompt, AI instruction

A prompt is whatever you send to an AI model to get a response. It can be a single question, a detailed set of instructions, a block of data to summarise, or a mix of all three. The model's output depends heavily on what the prompt says and how clearly it says it.

Modern prompts often have several parts: a role ("you are a friendly cafe assistant"), the task, background information, examples of the desired output, and rules about tone or format. Chat tools hide much of this, but business AI systems usually assemble the prompt automatically from a template, the customer's message and any retrieved facts.

Owners meet prompts when they use tools to draft product descriptions, reply to reviews, write rosters notes or build customer-facing assistants. A good prompt for a review reply, for example, includes the review, your brand voice, your refund policy and what not to promise.

Vague prompts give vague, generic answers, and prompts that leave out key facts invite the model to guess. Keep sensitive data such as customer details or financials out of prompts sent to public tools unless your provider terms and privacy settings allow it. Save prompts that work so staff can reuse them consistently.

Prompts are the main way non-technical staff control AI. Learning to write them well is often the quickest way to improve results without paying for anything extra.
