People Counting & Store Analytics

What is Staff-to-Customer Ratio?

Also known as: customer to staff ratio, staffing ratio, shopper to staff ratio

Staff-to-customer ratio compares the number of customers in a store or venue with the number of staff working. It can be measured as visitors per staff member over an hour, or as the live number of people on the floor per team member.

To calculate it, you need visitor counts, ideally by hour or live occupancy from a two-way counter, and roster or timesheet data. Dividing visitors by staff hours shows how stretched or idle the team is at different times.

Retailers use it to make sure customers can be served promptly, particularly in assisted-sale categories like electronics, fashion and pharmacy. Hospitality venues use it to decide on floor and bar staffing, and some licensed venues must also consider crowd and safety requirements.

There is no universal right ratio. The best level depends on the product, customer expectations and tasks such as fitting rooms, pickups and cleaning. Staff who are in the back room or on breaks should not be counted as available. Check results against conversion rate and customer feedback instead of chasing a single number. Reviewing it hourly shows which part of the day is under pressure, rather than hiding it in a daily average.

Aligning staff to customer traffic improves service and controls wages.
