People Counting & Store Analytics

What is Zone Analytics?

Also known as: area analytics, department analytics, zone-based analytics

Zone analytics is the measurement of visitor activity within specific areas of a store, such as a department, a promotional display, a fitting room or a checkout. Instead of one count for the whole shop, it gives numbers for each zone, including visits and time spent.

Overhead 3D sensors or cameras with analytics software track anonymous movement across the floor. The user draws virtual zones on a plan of the store, and the system records how many people enter each zone, how long they stay and how the zones connect. Results can be reported by hour, day or campaign.

Retailers use zone data to compare how attractive different departments are, test new displays and see where customers lose interest. A zone with many visitors but few sales may have a pricing or stock issue, while a zone with few visitors may need better signage. Hospitality venues and event spaces use zones to understand which areas draw crowds.

Zone design needs thought. Zones that are too small give unreliable numbers, while zones that are too large hide detail. They should match real merchandising areas, and the zone layout should be updated when fixtures move, otherwise reports compare unlike things. Zone data is most useful alongside sales by category from the point of sale system.

Zone analytics matters because stores are not uniform. Average whole-store figures can hide a strong department and a weak one. Measuring by zone gives managers a way to ask specific questions about layout, merchandising and staffing, and to judge changes by what actually happened.
