What is Cookie Consent?

Also known as: cookie banner, tracking consent, consent management

Cookie consent is the mechanism, usually a banner or preferences panel, that tells website visitors which cookies and similar tracking technologies are in use and lets them accept or decline non-essential ones. Cookies are small files that remember sessions, carts, preferences and, in some cases, behaviour across sites.

A consent management tool blocks analytics, advertising and other optional scripts until the visitor agrees, records the choice and lets them change it later. It is often connected with Google Tag Manager and Google's consent settings so tags behave according to the visitor's choice.

Australia has no general cookie banner law like the EU's GDPR regime, but the Privacy Act can apply when cookies collect personal information. Retailers selling to people in the EU or UK may need to comply with those rules. A privacy policy describing tracking is a sensible baseline for any shop.

Pitfalls include banners that load tracking before consent, hide the decline option or never record the choice. Declined cookies mean less data in analytics, so measurement becomes estimated, and consent modes can help model the gap. Check which jurisdictions your customers are in and get advice where unsure.

Handling consent properly builds trust and keeps tracking defensible. RetailCare's web and marketing services include analytics and tag setup.
