What is First-Party Data?

Also known as: owned customer data, zero-party data, customer data collection

First-party data is information a business gathers directly from its customers through its own channels. Examples include purchase history from the POS, email sign-ups, loyalty memberships, website behaviour, booking details and survey answers. A related term, zero-party data, means information customers choose to share, such as preferences.

It is collected through checkout, loyalty programs, forms, apps and tracking on the business's own site, then stored in a POS, CRM or customer data platform. Because the customer dealt directly with the business, the data is generally more accurate and relevant than data bought from third parties.

Its importance has grown because browsers and platforms are restricting third-party cookies and tracking, which makes advertising based on outside data less reliable. Retailers and venues rely on their own data for email and SMS marketing, personalisation, audience lists for advertising and understanding repeat customers.

Collect only what you need, tell customers how it will be used in a clear privacy policy, secure it properly and obtain consent for marketing. Under Australian privacy law, that includes taking reasonable steps to protect personal information and handling data breaches appropriately. Keep records tidy, since duplicates and old data undermine every later use.

A well-kept customer list is a durable business asset. RetailCare helps connect POS, ecommerce and marketing systems so this data is usable.
