What is Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS)?

Also known as: EAS, security gates, anti-theft tags

Electronic article surveillance, or EAS, is an anti-theft system that uses security tags on merchandise and detection gates at store exits. If a tag that has not been deactivated or removed passes through the gates, an alarm sounds to alert staff.

An EAS system has tags or labels, deactivation or detaching equipment at the counter, and antennas, often built into pedestals at the door. Common technologies include radio frequency and acoustic-magnetic systems, each with different tag types and detection characteristics. Soft labels are usually deactivated at checkout, while hard tags are removed with a detacher after purchase.

Retailers apply tags at the supplier, the distribution centre or in store, matching the type of tag to the product. Clothing, cosmetics, electronics and other commonly stolen goods are typical targets. The visible gates also act as a deterrent. Newer systems may combine EAS with RFID, so a single tag provides both inventory visibility and security.

Considerations include the width of the exit, the store environment, metal fixtures that can interfere, and how consistently tags are applied and removed. False alarms from tags left active by mistake frustrate customers and weaken staff confidence, so training at the counter matters. Decide what staff should do when an alarm sounds, and put safe, respectful procedures in place.

EAS matters because it gives a continuous layer of protection that does not depend on staff watching every customer. As part of a broader loss prevention program, it helps reduce shrinkage and supports a more relaxed shopping environment.
