Guidance for AI Adoption is voluntary guidance from the Australian Government's National AI Centre, published in October 2025. It replaces and simplifies the earlier Voluntary AI Safety Standard, which had 10 guardrails, with six key practices.
The six practices are: decide who is accountable; understand impacts and plan accordingly; measure and manage risks; share essential information; test and monitor; and maintain human control. There is a Foundations version for organisations starting out and a more detailed implementation version for governance and technical specialists.
A retailer or hospitality operator can use the Foundations version as a checklist: name an AI owner, list the tools in use, note who could be affected, tell customers when AI is involved, test tools before and after launch, and keep people able to step in.
It is voluntary, not law, and it does not replace obligations such as privacy, consumer and discrimination law. Guidance and government websites change, so check the current version on industry.gov.au or ai.gov.au. Treat it as a starting point and adapt it to the size and risk of your business.
It matters because it gives smaller businesses a practical, free reference point they can show to customers, insurers and partners without building a framework from scratch.
