A handheld scanner is a portable computer with a built-in barcode or RFID reader. Staff carry it around the store or stockroom to scan products for receiving, stocktakes, transfers, price checks and picking orders.
The device connects over Wi-Fi to the inventory or POS software. Scanning a product retrieves its details and updates records in real time, or stores them for upload when connection returns.
Retailers use handhelds to speed up goods receipt, run cycle counts, look up stock on the shop floor and reduce typing errors. Rugged models cope with drops and busy stockrooms.
When choosing, consider scan range, battery life, screen size, ruggedness and whether it supports the codes and RFID tags you use. Make sure it works with your POS software and that staff are trained.
