What is IT Consulting?

Also known as: technology consulting, IT advisory, IT strategy consulting

IT consulting is professional advice on how an organisation should plan, choose, implement and improve its technology so that it supports business goals. A consultant looks at what the business is trying to achieve, assesses its current systems and recommends practical changes, along with the cost, effort and risk involved.

Engagements often start with a review of the existing environment, including hardware, networks, software, security, contracts and how staff actually work. The consultant then develops options and a roadmap, which might cover a POS replacement, a network upgrade, a cloud migration, a security uplift or a rollout across new stores. Some consultants also manage the project, coordinating vendors and testing before go-live.

Retailers and hospitality groups typically seek consulting when expanding, replacing ageing systems, integrating several platforms, preparing for compliance requirements or noticing that technology costs and outages are rising. A neutral view helps when vendors each promote their own product, and a clear roadmap helps spread investment over several budget periods.

Consider what the engagement will deliver, such as a written report, a plan or hands-on implementation, and whether the adviser has relevant retail or hospitality experience. Beware of advice that is tied to one product without disclosure, and of plans that ignore staff training and change management, which cause many technology projects to underdeliver. Ask how success will be measured.

Good consulting reduces expensive mistakes by aligning technology choices with how the business operates and grows. RetailCare provides consulting services for retail and hospitality technology projects.
