A kitchen display system (KDS) is a screen-based system that shows food and drink orders to kitchen staff in place of paper dockets. Orders arrive from the POS, online ordering or QR ordering in real time and are tracked until they are ready to serve.
Orders entered at the POS are sent over the venue network to one or more screens, often grouped by station such as grill, fry, cold section or bar. Each ticket shows items, modifiers and notes, and cooks mark items as started or complete. Timers and colour changes highlight orders that are taking too long, and completed orders can notify front-of-house staff.
Restaurants, cafes and venues use a KDS to reduce lost or illegible tickets, route items to the right station and keep service flowing during busy periods. The timing data it collects can also show where bottlenecks occur and how long dishes take to prepare.
Considerations include screen placement and heat or grease resistance, a stable wired or Wi-Fi network, how orders are split between stations, and whether staff will need a printer as a backup. Menu modifiers must be set up clearly, because confusing instructions on screen cause the same errors that handwriting does on paper.
A KDS matters because kitchen accuracy and speed directly affect customer satisfaction and food waste. RetailCare supports hospitality platforms such as Restroworks and VenueSumo and can advise on hardware and networking for kitchen environments.
