What is QR Code Ordering?

Also known as: scan to order, table ordering, mobile ordering

QR code ordering is a system where customers scan a printed QR code with their phone camera to open a venue's menu in a web page, place an order and often pay without waiting for staff. Each code can be linked to a specific table.

A QR code is simply a scannable link. When scanned, it opens a web-based menu connected to the venue's POS. The customer selects items, adds modifiers and submits the order, which is sent to the kitchen or bar and appears on a screen or printer, tagged with the table number. Payment can be taken in the browser through a card form or a digital wallet.

Cafes, pubs, restaurants and food courts use QR ordering to reduce queues, free staff from taking orders and give customers time to browse. Menu changes and sold-out items can be updated instantly, and the data collected shows what sells and when.

Considerations include having reliable venue Wi-Fi or good mobile coverage, making sure the menu is easy to use on small screens, and providing a simple alternative for guests who prefer to order with staff. Codes must be tied to the right tables, and payment and tip handling should be clear. Be open about how customer data from ordering is collected and used.

QR ordering matters because it can improve speed and table turnover while giving customers control. RetailCare supports hospitality POS platforms and can help venues connect ordering, kitchen screens, payments and networks.
