What is Marketing Automation?

Also known as: automated campaigns, email automation, customer journeys automation

Marketing automation is software that sends messages or runs campaign steps automatically based on rules and customer behaviour. Instead of a person pressing send, an action such as signing up, buying or going quiet triggers the next message.

It works by linking customer records to triggers and conditions. A new subscriber might get a welcome email, a first-purchase thank you three days later and a review request after delivery. The system tracks responses and can branch, so someone who clicks receives a different follow-up from someone who does not.

Retailers use it for welcome series, abandoned carts, post-purchase care, restock reminders and win-back offers for lapsed shoppers. Hospitality businesses use it for birthday offers, booking reminders and quiet-period promotions, often fed by data from the POS or booking system.

The main risks are over-complication and poor data. A sequence built on duplicate or out-of-date customer records sends wrong or repeated messages. Review flows regularly, cap how many messages one person can receive, and honour unsubscribes across every channel in line with the Spam Act.

Automation suits small teams because it repeats good practice consistently without extra effort. RetailCare builds automated flows as part of its eCommerce and digital marketing work.
