What is Customer Data Platform (CDP)?

Also known as: CDP, unified customer profile

A customer data platform, or CDP, is software that collects customer information from many sources and combines it into a single, persistent profile for each person. Other tools can then use that unified view for marketing, service and analysis.

A CDP ingests data from the website, app, POS, ecommerce platform, loyalty program, email and customer service systems. It matches records belonging to the same person using identifiers such as email address, phone number or loyalty ID, a process called identity resolution. Segments can then be built, for example recent buyers of a category, and pushed to email, advertising or personalisation tools.

Retailers use CDPs to tailor offers, avoid sending messages to people who just bought, understand lifetime value and connect in-store and online behaviour. Hospitality groups can recognise returning guests across venues. The value depends on having POS and loyalty data flowing in.

Considerations include data quality, since duplicate or outdated records weaken results, and privacy. Customer data must be collected with appropriate notice and consent and handled in line with the Privacy Act, with sensible limits on retention and access. A CDP is not always necessary, as a smaller business may do well with a good CRM and loyalty system. Clear goals and integration work should come before buying software.

A CDP matters because fragmented customer data leads to repetitive, irrelevant communication. One reliable view helps retailers treat customers consistently across channels.
