Next-best-offer is an approach where software chooses the one offer, product or message most likely to suit a particular customer right now. It replaces sending the same promotion to everyone.
The system scores a set of possible offers for each customer using purchase history, current basket, loyalty status, location and likelihood to respond. It also applies business rules such as margin, stock levels, offer limits and fatigue, so it does not push the same message repeatedly. The winning offer is delivered through email, app, website, till screen or receipt.
Retailers use it at checkout and in the app to suggest an add-on or tailored discount. Restaurants and QSR kiosks use it to propose a dessert, upgrade or drink that suits the order. It can also decide when no offer is best, protecting margin.
It needs connected customer data and a way to deliver offers in real time, which many smaller businesses lack at first. Always test against simple rules, because complexity does not guarantee better results. Check that offers comply with Australian Consumer Law and privacy obligations, and that discounts are not given to people who would have bought anyway.
Done well, it lifts basket size and loyalty without blanket discounting.
