What is Loyalty Program?

Also known as: rewards program, customer loyalty scheme, loyalty scheme

A loyalty program is a scheme that rewards customers for repeat purchases, typically with points, discounts, special offers or member-only benefits. Its purpose is to encourage return visits and to give the business a record of who its customers are and what they buy.

Most programs are tied to the POS. Customers join by providing an email address or phone number, or by using an app, card or digital wallet pass, and are identified at checkout. The system records purchases against their profile, adds points or applies rewards, and stores the history so offers can be targeted. Many programs also integrate with email or text platforms, so members can receive birthday offers or reminders without manual effort.

Retailers and hospitality venues use loyalty data to see purchase frequency, favourite products and lapsed customers, and to send relevant promotions through email or text. Common models include points per dollar spent, tiered memberships and simple stamp-style rewards.

Considerations include keeping the program simple enough for staff to explain at the counter, deciding what rewards are affordable, and making sure the offer actually changes behaviour rather than just discounting sales that would have happened anyway. Under the Privacy Act and the Spam Act, businesses must handle personal information carefully and obtain proper consent for marketing messages.

A well-run program matters because retaining existing customers is usually cheaper than finding new ones. Platforms such as Nomni include customer engagement tools, and RetailCare can help retailers connect loyalty to their POS and wider systems.
