What is Penetration Testing?

Also known as: pen test, vulnerability assessment, security testing, ethical hacking

Penetration testing, or pen testing, is a controlled and authorised attempt by security professionals to break into a business's systems, websites, networks or applications. The goal is to find and prove real weaknesses so they can be fixed before criminals exploit them.

Testers follow an agreed scope and rules. They scan for vulnerabilities, try to exploit them, and record what they reach, then deliver a report ranking the issues and recommending fixes. It differs from a vulnerability scan, which is an automated check for known weaknesses and does not try to exploit them.

Retailers and hospitality businesses most often need it for ecommerce sites, customer portals, apps and payment environments. Standards such as PCI DSS include testing requirements for businesses that handle card data, and what applies depends on how the business takes payments, so check the current rules.

Pitfalls include testing without written authorisation, an unclear scope, and treating the report as the finish line when the fixes are what matter. Choose a reputable provider, retest after fixes, and test after major changes. Many small venues using certified payment terminals will not need a full test of their own, but websites and apps may.

It gives evidence of how secure a system really is, and helps prioritise limited security budgets.
