A rugged mobile computer is a handheld device built to survive drops, dust and daily heavy use, usually with a built-in barcode scanner, a touchscreen and a battery that lasts a full shift. It runs inventory apps rather than just scanning a code.
The device connects over Wi-Fi to the inventory or warehouse system. A worker scans a barcode or an RFID tag and the screen shows the product, quantity and location, and lets them count, receive, pick or transfer on the spot. Many run Android and can use the same apps as a smartphone.
Retailers use them for stocktakes, receiving, price checks and transferring stock between stores. Warehouses use them for picking and putaway, and some hospitality venues use them for bottle-level bar stocktakes or cellar counts. Models with RFID readers can count tagged items in bulk.
Pitfalls include buying consumer devices that crack or lose battery life under heavy use, poor Wi-Fi in the stockroom, and software that is slow to scan. Management of updates and lost devices also matters, as they hold business data.
A well-chosen device speeds up counting and cuts keying errors, and a managed-device setup keeps them secure and working across stores. Check battery life, scanner speed and app compatibility before committing to a model.
