What is Security Awareness Training?

Also known as: cyber awareness training, staff cyber training, phishing simulation, cyber security training for staff

Security awareness training teaches employees how to recognise and respond to cyber threats such as phishing emails, fake invoices, dodgy links, unsafe USB drives and social engineering phone calls. Its aim is to turn staff from the weakest link into an early warning system.

Programs usually combine short online modules, simulated phishing emails sent to staff, and quick refreshers on current scams. Results show who clicked or reported a message and where more help is needed. Good programs are brief, regular and non-punitive, so staff feel safe to report mistakes.

In retail and hospitality, where staff turnover is high and casual workers use shared devices, training needs to be simple and part of induction. Topics should include password habits, handling card and customer data, spotting payment scams, locking screens and who to tell when something looks wrong. Short, store-specific scenarios, such as a fake delivery notice or a request to change a roster login, tend to be remembered better than generic warnings.

A once-a-year video that nobody remembers does little. Focus on realistic examples, repeat key messages, and make reporting easy with a clear contact and no blame. Training works alongside technical controls such as email filtering and multi-factor authentication, not instead of them.

Because many attacks start with one person clicking one link, informed staff are among the most cost-effective defences.
