POS & Payments

What is Split Bill?

Also known as: split payment, separate checks, pay by seat

Split bill is a POS feature that divides a single order into multiple payments. A group can pay equally, by seat, by item or with custom amounts, using different cards, cash or vouchers for each portion.

Staff open the table's order and choose how to split: select items for each guest, divide the total by a number, or enter amounts. Each portion gets its own receipt and payment. The POS keeps the original order intact for reporting, and it applies discounts, service charges and tips fairly across parts. Venues that allow guests to split at the table on a handheld or a QR code often finish payment faster than those that walk each card to a fixed terminal. Test how the feature behaves on your busiest nights.

Restaurants, pubs and cafes use split bill constantly for groups, and it matters at busy venues where time at the terminal slows turnover. Pay-at-table devices and QR payment let guests split without a server, speeding up table turn.

Check how your system handles shared items, service charges and surcharges across splits, and how rounding is allocated so totals add up. Make sure payment terminals can take several payments on one table and that a failed card on one share does not block the others.

Smooth splitting improves guest experience and reduces staff time at the terminal, especially for large groups.
