What is 4G/5G Fixed Wireless Internet?

Also known as: 5G home internet, 4G backup, mobile broadband for business, 5G router

4G/5G fixed wireless internet delivers broadband over a mobile phone network instead of a cable. A modem or router with a SIM card connects to the nearest mobile tower and shares the connection with devices in the store over Ethernet or Wi-Fi. It is separate from the nbn Fixed Wireless service, which uses nbn's own towers.

Speed and reliability depend on signal strength, tower congestion and the plan's data allowance. Placing the modem near a window, or using an external antenna, often makes a large difference, and a short test at the actual site is the best guide.

Retailers use it as a backup when the main NBN link fails, as the main connection at pop-up stores, market stalls and event sites, or where fixed broadband is slow or unavailable. Many business routers can switch to it automatically, which keeps card terminals and cloud POS working.

Check data caps and throttling, how many devices will share it, whether the carrier's coverage reaches the site, and whether the plan permits business use. Congestion in busy precincts can slow service at peak times, just when a venue needs it most.

It is a low-cost way to lift resilience, as long as the failover is tested and not just assumed to work.
