Mobile device management (MDM) is software that lets an IT team control company tablets, phones and handheld devices from a central console. It can push apps and settings, enforce passcodes and encryption, restrict what staff can install, and lock or wipe a device that is lost or stolen.
Devices are enrolled in the system, often automatically when first switched on, and then receive policies over the internet. Well-known platforms include Microsoft Intune, Apple Business Manager with an MDM, and Android Enterprise tools. Kiosk mode can lock a device to one app, such as the POS.
Retailers manage fleets of iPads for mobile POS, handheld scanners for stocktakes and tablets for self-order or reservations. Hospitality venues use it to keep staff tablets locked to ordering apps and to set up a replacement device quickly during service.
Pitfalls include not enrolling devices that staff already use, forgetting to remove access when staff leave, mixing personal and work data without a clear policy, and not keeping operating systems updated. Check the licence cost per device and whether your POS and scanner apps work in kiosk mode.
MDM turns a pile of loose devices into a managed, secure fleet, which matters most when there are many stores.
